OSHA PEL exposure testing in California

Exposure testing, also called workplace exposure monitoring, is the industrial hygiene work that measures what workers breathe during a shift, so an employer can compare it with Cal/OSHA's permissible exposure limits, or PELs.

When people ask

  • A new process, chemical, or piece of equipment
  • Employees raise a concern about dust, fumes, or vapors
  • A client, insurer, or inspector asks for monitoring data

The credential

California doesn't issue a state license for exposure monitoring, so ask your partner what training they hold. We confirm credentials during vetting before a partner goes Active. Asbestos air monitoring is different: it needs a Cal/OSHA-certified asbestos consultant or site surveillance technician (CAC/CSST).

We match the request. The partner decides which substances to sample and for how long, and they write the report.

Results show exposure during the sampling period. They don't make a workplace compliant. The employer's safety program and Cal/OSHA rules govern that.
