Private wells are the owner's call
The State Water Resources Control Board says California does not regulate the water quality of private domestic wells. That leaves testing decisions to the well owner. Your county environmental health office is the local resource for well questions.
What owners commonly test for
The U.S. EPA suggests testing a private well once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. The State Water Board's domestic well sampling has looked for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and other metals, and general minerals. Your partner sets the list based on your well and what's around it, such as farmland or older plumbing.
Where the samples go
Ask your partner which ELAP-accredited lab will analyze the samples. ELAP is the State Water Board's Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program. No state license covers the sampling itself, so ask the partner how its staff were trained.
What the report shows
The report lists what was measured and how much was found. Your partner walks you through it, and your county environmental health office can help with next steps. Top Test Connect doesn't judge results.
How Request a tester works
Mention that the water comes from a private well, and include the property's ZIP. We match it with a testing partner for that location, where one is available. That partner contacts you, prices the job, and invoices you.
Save at least $100 with the Top Test Connect service credit.
Credit applies when you book with the partner testing company we match you with. One credit per request, no cash value.
No obligation. You never have to use the tester we match you with.
Questions
How often should a private well be tested?
EPA suggests once a year for bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, and more often in some situations. Your partner can help you plan a testing schedule.
Does the state test private wells?
Not as a rule. The State Water Board's domestic well project has sampled wells in a handful of counties, but the state doesn't regulate private well water quality.
Do I have to use the tester you match me with?
No obligation. You never have to use the tester we match you with.
